Materials used in Fjallraven clothes and Kanken backpacks.

Nature is the greatest source of inspiration. It is also where materials come from and where the impact of consumption is most strongly felt.

No decision is taken lightly. When choosing a material, they evaluate its performance, functional characteristics, chemical composition and the quantity needed to choose it. To help us make decisions, we use the Favorite Materials and Fibers List, which rates materials according to their environmental impact.

And this list is constantly being updated to include new research and new materials.

LIST OF FAVORITE MATERIALS AND FIBERS

It doesn’t matter how durable the outer shell of a jacket or backpack is, whether it doesn’t soak through. They have to balance the functionality and performance of the material with its environmental impact. They use organic, renewable and recycled materials whenever possible. Natural materials are also a priority. Of course, a material that lasts longer is better than one that has to be replaced after two winters.

We divide our materials and fibers as follows:

excellent, such as reclaimed wool, organic hemp and Tencel®;

good, such as recycled polyester, G-1000 Eco and wool;

OK such as polyamide, cotton, metal buttons;

and those they don't use, such as PFC, PVC, and angora wool.
